“Selective/Memory”
By D D Lorenzo
Prologue/Capacity
It was perfect—at least, for this purpose. This was the location. That was, after all, what she had come to expect, wasn’t it? Perfection. Nothing more, nothing less, and it pleased her. An ocean view because he liked it, seclusion because she did. It wasn’t an enormous house, but would be adequate for her needs; she truly didn’t consider his. She had only picked the ocean view house due to the seclusion, and she could make him believe that she chose it for him. It was all an illusion, really—as were most things for her accommodation. The furnishings had arrived earlier in the week. She didn’t inconvenience herself for their arrival—there were people who handled that sort of thing—and she hated mingling with those that didn’t matter. Money took care of them and what they did to suit her. As she walked from room to room, she took in some of the mediocre choices she had made—all for his taste—so she could achieve her ultimate goal—him. How did that beach bitch ever stand the look of this shit? she thought as she wrinkled her nose in distaste at the overstuffed sofa and chairs in the living room. It was a bit more elegant a display than was in Declan’s home. Of course it would be—she was Marisol Franzi! Her taste was much better than Declan’s or his former plaything. That was evident to even the most mundane decorator. Walking through the kitchen, she snickered at the coffeemaker, thinking it almost blasé. Did he never think of cappuccino, espresso? Did the man even remember he had been all over the world? The kitchen looked adequate enough, but no matter, she wouldn’t be there long enough to think about it—and she certainly didn’t cook! The idea was appalling. As her stiletto heels made a clicking sound on the shiny hardwood stairs, Marisol ascended as a queen in a kingdom. The master bedroom suite at the top of the stairs held a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean, its iniquitous waters as black as the void in her soul. The dark night sky held not a single star, to spare her a flicker of hope in her malevolent beauty. An imposing full moon cast a sinister light into the room. It beckoned her to walk up to the large window, which could be seen from the massive bed, the wood expertly carved in the four posters. ♪ “Oh…the things you will see me do, Mr. Moon…” she said suggestively as she reached up, first one arm, then the other, behind her to unzip her dress. Letting it fall to the floor, Marisol made her way to the bed and crawled like a cat into the middle of its grand size as a contemptible shadow followed her from the window. Lying there, she stared out at the moon, reveling in the knowledge that she could hear nothing but the objectionable ocean, and that no one would be able to hear the screams and moans that would come from this house. The thoughts that crossed her mind gave her the most delicious sensation running through her veins. She closed her eyes to savor the mental pictures. She had been tolerant, compliant, and even passive until she felt she would scream, but for this, she had planned every small detail. She shivered with the intensity of joy that flooded her, knowing that her efforts would not be in vain, and the time was coming soon. She’d finally get what she had planned and waited for. Nothing—and no one—could stop her. No one ever could. When she had come to this country, and she, Marisol—THE supermodel—was created, they told her she’d never want for anything again—and they didn’t know how right they were.
She was invincible.
She had conquered everything.
She was a vencedor—a winner!

Synopsis

Calvin Parish They call me Hero. I defend. I protect. I ask for nothing in return, and that makes me good. Doesn’t it?
That which makes me the ultimate predator also feeds dark impulses I’ve learned to control—until I bring her too close. For years I’ve watched her from afar, but what started out as duty has become obsession.
Cataline Ford I work hard. I play by the rules. I’m content. My scars are quiet and invisible, and that keeps me hidden. Doesn’t it?
One fateful walk home, I’m taken by someone I didn’t know I should fear. Captive and afraid, nobody will tell me why I’m confined to this hauntingly beautiful mansion. I’m given everything; I have nothing. He takes what he needs from me, and for that I hate him. But I might have loved him once.
And just because you’re reading this doesn’t mean I survive him.

Lesley's Review
Hero was one of those highly anticipated-”I’ve got to have it”- type of books. Once you read the blurb it just sucks you in. The dark and mysteriousness creeps out to tease you. I walked into this one without a clue of what was going to be happening. I mean aside from what the blurb says…but that really doesn’t tell you much.  The not knowing is what fueled the experience for me.  It added that extra bit of intrigue.

“It’s true; I’ve spent my life trying to do the right thing, see the positive in people, find the light in the darkness. This is where it led me.”

The main character, Cataline, is portrayed as the sweet girl next door. The one that follows all the rules, the one that trust those she shouldn’t and she knows it. She moved away from her foster home because they never really felt like family. With a new grip on her life, she starts building her future. Cataline lands an awesome job at a media company. Except for the fact thatShe detests her boss, she loves her job. And ogling the CEO. She’s just a normal girl wanting a normal life.  BUT…. One night on her way home, Cataline finds herself in a tragic situation. She’s kidnapped.

“If you are thinking of flying, Sparrow, know that I will catch you. There is no escape.”

When Cataline wakes, she finds herself in a mansion. Who’s mansion? Where? Why? For how long? These are some of the questions she tries to ask. However, not a single one of the staff will speak the answers. Oh, they speak to her. They are actually nice and have not harmed her. This to me is unsettling. Just think…she’s being held against her will but is almost pampered. Never knowing if or when the other shoe is going to drop. Thoroughly confused, Cataline starts to rebel against the rules.

The man of the house has no choice but to step up and control Cataline. It’s his way or the hard way. He is not a man for chaos. There are rules to be obeyed. Strict rules made to keep mistakes at bay. He must be in Control at all times. When he reveals himself to Cataline it’s to assert his control. Surprise. He claims to be keeping her there to protect her. Who does she really need protection from?  Yeah.

“It makes so much goddamn sense. There isn’t a person in the world who could save me but you.”

Hero was definitely one of those that managed to shock me. I thought I pretty much got over that with other books. No. This one managed to make me feel uncomfortable and hot. It made me feel trapped and on edge. The story inside the mansion was fantastic. Truly. I mean there were some awkward parts that were a little much for me. I did not find them appealing at all but this was Cataline’s story. I don’t have to like what happened to her. (I’m sure some of you will know exactly which parts)  I just rolled with it because I wanted to find out the rest. While in the mansion, the story was told well and held a strong foundation. However, the rest of the book, the surrounding story if you will, seemed thrown together and slightly lacking. It was as though everything that happened outside the mansion wasn’t as important. Maybe not but to me it felt rushed. To easy. With all that being said I would rate this one at about a 3.5 to a 4. I’m hovering between the two because there were parts that deserve the 4 but I just can’t give it a solid 4. I encourage you all to let us know what you thought…..

Guarded

Book Title: Guarded
Author: JD Rivera
Genre: Contemporary Romance Novella
Release Date: September 17, 2013

Synopsis
Vanessa Smith has her heart guarded. She’s been married to a man that sleeps around and has made her think she’s ugly and undeserving. Everything changes when she is knocked down by the famous basketball player, Jackson Berrios. A friendship ensues and everything she thought she knew about men turns out to be wrong. Jackson Berrios was out for a run in a new city when he made contact with the beautiful Vanessa Smith. He instantly knew she was different from most girls but can he make her see that he’s different from her cheating husband?

  excerpt

Guarded ex-2

Guarded is a novella that introduces us to Vanessa and Jackson. She is still healing from her ex’s harsh words and “extra-curricular activities.” Jackson is the newest player for the basketball team. He’s famous, gorgeous and has a reputation given to him by the tabloids.

While running one day, Jackson literally runs into Vanessa. It’s when she rolls over to let him know that she’s alright that she takes all thoughts out of his head. He’s really not ready for her to leave and he asks her to lunch. It’s not until then does she figure out who he is. But he wants to see her again. He likes her immediately; he knows she isn’t there just to have her picture taken. She didn’t even know who he was. Vanessa puts her guards up as soon as she finds out what he does for a living. Aren’t sports stars known for their exploits? She’s just getting away from that mess. Why would she want to start something else with someone she knows will more than likely be untrustworthy?

All Jackson asks for is a chance. Since his words might not be enough for her, he wants to prove that they will work, as a couple. But it’s not always fun and games. Can he really be faithful to Vanessa when there are plenty of available, gorgeous women out there? Thanks to her douche of an ex, her self-esteem is non-existent.

Guarded was an enjoyable read. Quick and easy but, I felt it lacked a little…something. Their story is just getting started and will continue in Defensive. Good thing is, I’m already invested in Jackson and Vanessa and will read their next book.

Walker sat on one of the stage steps, his chin in his hand as he spoke to the screaming crowd. “I need a volunteer for this next part.” His head raised slowly, his eyes scanning the crowd.
Keri jumped up and down like a crazy person, waving her arms and screaming his name. I laughed at her antics and sat perfectly still, not wanting to bring any more unwanted attention to myself.
Another tap on my shoulder caused my irritation to bubble as I turned to what was sure to be that annoying overly made-up stupid girl again.
It wasn’t.
I came face-to-face with a giant of a man wearing all black and holding a walkie-talkie. Intimidated, I took a half step back and looked around for Keri.
“Come with me.” His tone implied a demand, not a request, and I suddenly wondered what I’d done wrong.
Who the hell was this guy? He’s not the boss of me. He’s not going to tell me to come with him and think I’ll just obey. I frowned and said quickly, “Uh. No, thanks.”
He flashed his VIP backstage pass in my face as if it were the only credential he needed. “Miss. It’s part of the show. Can you come with me, please? You’ll be onstage with Mr. Rhodes.”
Oh.
Well, shit.
I guess he could be the boss of me, after all.
I shot Keri a surprised look before I was quickly hauled off in the direction of an almost completely darkened backstage area. We walked through a black curtain before we were hit with lights and blaring music.
“I’m going to bring you onstage.”
“And then what?” I asked, suddenly nervous. Not to be around Walker Rhodes, but nervous at the thought of standing in front of thousands of screaming people with cell phones ready to record my every move.
I started to tremble. Afraid my legs wouldn’t hold me up any longer, I begged the security guy to help me out there. He smiled at me and gave me a little shove.
Thanks, you dick.
Next thing I knew, I was standing onstage, my face mere inches from Walker’s. Walker no-human-being-should-be-anywhere-near-this-gorgeous-in-real-life Rhodes.

  HOAONS Teaser 4

  EXCERPT:
Colt wrapped an arm around my waist and pulled me closer. “No. I’d rather bother you.”
There was something kind of sexy about the motion, something more confident than his usual goofy flirting. His hand felt nice resting on my hip, so I let it stay. Was this really the same Colt? Since when did his touch have that kind of effect on me? “When did you get back to town?”
“About two hours ago.”
“You didn’t wait long to come out.” I took a big sip of the drink. It was starting to taste a lot better.
“I took time for a shower.”
“That was thoughtful of you.”
“Planning on getting close to me tonight?” He watched me intently.
“Maybe.” The flirtatious word flew out of my mouth without me realizing it. The alcohol and that smile of his was making me forget where I was. “Sorry.”
“Why are you sorry?” He moved his hand, turning me and wrapping his other arm around me so my body was pressed against his.
“Colton…”
“Mallory…”
I laughed. “What are you doing?”
“What am I doing? You’re the one telling me you might be getting close to me tonight.” His hand slid down slightly, settling below my hip. His touch felt so good.
“Your birthday passed, right? You’re nineteen now?”
He laughed that deep, throaty laugh of his. “I’m going to take it as a good sign that you’re checking to make sure I’m old enough.”
“I’m not supposed to be into younger guys.”
“I’m three months younger than you. I can’t help that my parents held me back a grade.” He leaned back against an old oak tree, pulling me along with him. The motion had me leaning into his chest.
“You’ve gotten hotter.” I couldn’t believe I’d said the words out loud. I also couldn’t believe I was thinking about Colton that way again.
He laughed once more. “So have you, although I wouldn’t have thought it was possible.”
I took another sip of my drink. “When did you get this cute?”
“Are you implying you haven’t been ready to jump me for the last five years?”
“I’ve never thought about it before tonight.” The words weren’t exactly true, but I hadn’t thought about it in a while.
“But you are thinking about it now?” He grinned, moving his hands even lower so they cradled my ass.
“Maybe.” His hands sent a thrill through me, reminding me of just how long it had been since a guy had touched me that way.
“That’s the second maybe you’ve given me. How am I supposed to make that into a yes?” He took the bottle from my hand and dropped it down on the ground next to his empty cup. The remaining liquid seeped out onto the dirt.
“I don’t know. It’s your job to figure that out.” I ran my now free hand down his chest. It was firmer and more muscular than I expected.
“My job, huh? I like the sound of that.” His lips tickled my ear. “I like the sound of anything involving you.” He took my hand and led me further into the grouping of trees. It wasn’t a dense forest or anything, but I knew he was looking for privacy. I didn’t object when he gently leaned me back into another tree.
I closed my eyes, ready to feel his lips and hands on my body. I was horrible at knowing what to do in those situations. I needed the guy to take control.
His lips brushed against mine as he rested his hand on my stomach. He slipped a few fingers underneath my shirt. “Am I earning a yes, or do I have more work to do?” he whispered with his lips right next to mine.
“You have more work.” I kept my eyes closed, taking in a breath as his hand moved further up my shirt.
