Excerpt:

I’m not sure why I did it, but I got up two hours early, took an extra long shower, made sure my hair cooperated, and put on my good makeup. Okay, that’s a lie. I know exactly why I put so much effort into getting ready. Today, I am supposed to see Cohen. Not only am I supposed to see Cohen, but we also have plans to go out to dinner. Once again, I’m unsure about what he wants to discuss, but this time, I’m trying not to make any assumptions. Also on the agenda, I hope to not injure him or myself while we’re spending time together. I walk into the office with my chin up and a big smile on my face. If he is already here, I want to look like I’ve been fine. I sure as hell don’t want him thinking that I’ve been moping around and pining away for him since last Friday morning. Making my way through the maze of cubicles toward my office, I see no sign of him. I let out a sigh as I step through my door. I place my workbag next to the desk, and I turn to glance at the clock. Something moves in my peripheral vision. It scares me enough to make me jump back, causing me to fall into my large potted plant-tree-thing in the corner. To avoid hitting the ground, I sit cockeyed in the pot. My face is covered in limbs and large green leaves. Peeking through the human-eating plant, I can see Cohen sitting on the comfortable sofa with one hand held over his mouth. I don’t hear any sounds, but from the looks of it, he’s laughing. For some reason, my usual standoffish self takes a holiday. I launch myself up from my seat in the pot holding the plant, and I take brisk steps toward him. “What are you doing in my office? Do you enjoy scaring the crap out of women and causing near catastrophes? Or is it just when you see me?” His eyes grow wide, and those sexy wrinkles beside his eyes fade. Thank God. I don’t think I could hold on to my angry attitude if he kept smiling. “Mr. Hargrove wanted me to tell you that we’ll be meeting in the conference room at eight thirty. I have to leave by the end of the week, so we need to get started on the rest of our project. I came to tell you, but you weren’t here yet, so I made myself comfortable. I’m sorry if I scared you.” “Right. Okay. Well, you can go now. I’ll see you at the meeting,” I say, turning toward my desk. With my shoulders back and head held high, I walk over to my desk chair and sit. Looking back at Cohen, I give him the meanest stare I can muster. “See you there.” He stands to leave, but then hesitates as if he wants to say something else. His mouth is open, but then he bites down on his bottom lip, holding back. “Did you need something else?” “Actually, I was just going to tell you that unless you enjoy the feel of sitting on bark, you should probably find a mirror and wipe off your skirt.” You have got to be kidding me! He walks out of the office with the wrinkles by his eyes reappearing.

I have enjoyed reading and writing since I was very young. Some of my fondest memories from childhood are of spending time with my mom or grandma reading a good book. Over the years, it never crossed my mind that writing my own novel would be an attainable goal. After reading several independently published novels by Jamie McGuire, Colleen Hoover and others, I decided I needed to give that dream a chance.
When I’m not reading and writing, I enjoy spending time with my three favorite guys: my husband and my two little boys.

Teaser -
“I have something I need to show you.” He looks at me expectantly as I gather my thoughts and try to work out the best way to explain.
I survey my surroundings, trying to find something that will help do the job. Dry leaves crunch under my feet after a summer of minimal rainstorms. Autumn colours litter the landscape as far as the eye can see. Finally, I find what I am looking for. Although a little shrivelled, this little flower is the one rare spot of colour and beauty standing out against its dismal background.
“Pass me your water bottle please.” Dutifully he passes it over, and I unscrew the top to get it ready. Already knowing the outcome of this little experiment, I want that water available to me straight away.
“Don’t take your eyes off the flower.” He nods and looks to where the depleted lily is situated. Slowly raising my hand, I crouch and move it over the petals in deliberate circles.
Tingles start travelling through my fingertips as they heat up. A slight glow illuminates around my hands, and that familiar blissful feeling flows through my veins. A smile creeps over my lips, and I am enraptured as the flower comes back to life before our eyes. With no more brown edges taking over the petals, they are now full of colour and perfect. This never gets old to me.

***Lesley's Review of Shooting Scars by Karina Halle***

Sometimes the right choice can be the deadliest.

When Ellie Watt made the ultimate sacrifice for Camden McQueen, she never thought it would be easy. But walking away with her ex-lover, Javier Bernal, in order to ensure Camden’s safety has brought a whole new set of dangers. With Javier’s plans for Ellie growing more secretive by the moment, Ellie must find a way to stay ahead of the game before her past swallows her whole.

Meanwhile, Camden’s new life is short-lived. Fueled by revenge and pursued by authorities, he teams up with an unlikely partner in order to save Ellie. But as Camden toes the line between love and retribution, he realizes that in order to get back the woman he loves, he may have to lose himself in the process. He might just turn into the very man he’s hunting.

Told in dual POV from Camden and Ellie.

Lesley's Review

Ellie Watt and Camden McQueen were made to part ways in Sins & Needles. Some may say it was Ellie’s choice but really who has a choice around Javier Bernal, the drug running sociopath. Who, just so happens to be Ellie’s ex-boyfriend that left her heart shattered. So, in Shooting Scars we pick right up where we left off. This story flips back and forth between Ellie and Camden.
Ellie is now at the hands of Javier. It’s a cruel twist of fate. It’s been 6 years or so, since she ran away and stole his beloved car, Jose. Her heart, however, still feels the hurt that Javier inflicted. Her brain tells her to fear him. However, does she fear Javier because he could kill her or does she fear she will fall for this man, again? Recognizing that it’s both, Ellie braces herself for the unknown.  She believes she did the right thing by giving Camden the chance to fix his family but she wonders what price she is going to pay.
“He looked like a citron-eyed lion in a white linen suit, a creature larger than the sum of his parts.”
Javier has changed. He has become harder and colder. Doing things to Ellie she wouldn’t have expected from the Javier she was in love with. He’s a mercurial creature. One minute giving her glimpses of the man she used to love. The next, He is threatening to kill Cameron if she doesn’t help him on his journey to exact revenge on the one person they have in-common, Travis. It seems that while Ellie was gone, Javier was alittle busy planning a coup and building his empire. He has a plan that involves Ellie doing exactly what she did to him to Travis.
Meanwhile, Camden is struggling on his end. He feels he should do the best for his son and try to make things right with his ex-wife. But he is torn between that and finding Ellie. Sometimes, doing what’s right isn’t always rewarded. Camden soon realizes that it’s all been a show. He’s been suckered, again. He vows to not let Ellie down.  He is going to find Ellie and rescue her from Javier.Camden seeks out the only person he knows that could help him. The Mysterious Gus.
“All for a girl. But she wasn’t just any girl. She was mine. And I was hers. Until the bitter end.”
Eventually, the stories merge. They find Ellie and crew in Mexico.Upon finding Ellie, Camden realizes that maybe Ellie didn’t need to be rescued after all. He still vows to help Ellie. She is being put into a messed up situation that could unravel and end with Ellie dead. People double crossing people. That seems to be the gist of the story here. Who do you trust? No one. Trust no one but yourself. At the close of the book it comes down to the key players, Javier, Camden and Ellie. They decide what will happen next. Will enemies become partners? At this point it’s more than who loves who.
“It was wrong. So wrong. And I didn’t care. As I had been so many times before, I was willing to be bad.”
I absolutely love this series. With everyone picking sides I feel like the odd man out. I can’t choose a side.  I know Javier is a crazy, drug running killer and the obvious choice is Camden. Just the phrase “Javier, is one messed up dude” does not cover it, but deep down I feel that he cares about Ellie. He’s turned himself into a machine.  He has to front the crazy to be who he is. In the end, will he do the right thing?Camden is in love with Ellie but is that love enough to save her from the mess that entangles her? I believe his love for Ellie gives him the strength to become the bad-a$$ that he needs to be to win. For once I would love to see Camden become the man he wants to be.  The one who was emerging in this book. Let’s not forget about Gus, I feel there is more to his story with Ellie then we know. I have a feeling a bomb is going to rock Ellie’s world. In the end I pray that Ellie gets the HEA she deserves. Things are going to get crazy in Bold Tricks and I can’t wait.  I give this book 4 bad-a$$ stars.

Excerpt:

He pulled out her chair and she sat, watching his every move as he made his way to his own seat. “I hope this is okay. This is the most private table they have.”
“It’s perfect.” She tried to breathe normally and ignore the strange feeling in her stomach. Trace grinned, revealing the boyish dimples that framed his perfect mouth.
“They have the best steak here. Seriously. You better order one for yourself because you’re not getting any of mine.”
At that, she laughed and her nerves eased up a bit. “Oh, I bet you’d give me a bite if I asked nicely.”
He eyed her from over the top of his menu. “Do you ask for things nicely? I don’t think I’ve ever seen you do that before.”
With her stomach clenching from the heat in his stare, Kylie put her menu aside. “Maybe you’ve never had anything I wanted badly enough to ask nicely for.” He raised a brow and opened his mouth to respond. But at that same moment, a waitress appeared and asked for their drink order. Kylie didn’t miss how flustered the girl became when she got an eyeful of Trace. It would’ve been irritating, but really, with the way he looked tonight, Kylie couldn’t blame her. She was still trying to get a handle on her own self.
When the waitress left, Trace leaned across the table. “Actually, I take that back. I’ve heard you ask nicely a time or two. Matter of fact, it bordered on begging. I think it went something like, ‘Oh God, yes, please. Trace, please.’”
Heat crawled over her skin at his imitation of her. Barely keeping the grin of embarrassment from her face, she shook her head. “You’re not right. What kind of thing is that to say to a girl on a first date?” He grinned back, the promise of something dark gleaming in his eyes.
“Considering this date is going to end with that dress on my bedroom floor and your legs wrapped around my neck, I think it’s a perfectly acceptable thing to say.” Good Lord. What was she going to do with this man? Oh yeah. Exactly what he’d just described.
