Synopsis:
Being pulled in different directions, Amara must choose what she wants to believe and whom she'll trust.

EXCERPT:
“Amara! Get in here!”
The sole of her left foot hadn’t even left the elevator floor before she was greeted with an order from Colin. She would have cringed, had she not known him; had she not already been dealing with his turbulent bipolar-like attitude for the past week and a half. Old Colin wasn’t this way. Old Colin, pre-Méchant Colin, was always calm, cool, collected and rather calculating, but never hot and cold like new Colin. As Amara lowered her purse-inspired briefcase to the floor beside her chair and walked over to his office.  His back was to her, affording her a view of his well-dressed backside clothed in a navy pinstriped suit and white dress shirt.  Although new Colin was a pain in the ass, he also made her a little hotter, if that was even possible, than old Colin.
“Good morning,” she said, stopping just inside the threshold of his office.  Amara rested her hand on the doorway and leaned into it as she waited for him to respond.
He scowled at her as he turned around. “You didn’t cancel my appointment with Mr. Winters for two o’clock.”
Her eyes jumped on a couple of items in his office, as her mind replayed yesterday before landing back on his angry gaze. “No. You had an appointment with Mr. White at two, I canceled it like you asked, and Brandon replaced it with an appointment with Mr. Winters.”
“Why would he do that?” he growled.
She shrugged in response.
“Okay, okay,” he said, repeating a silent mantra as he pinched the bridge of his nose. “Okay.” He looked up at her as if he found a solution. “I hope you’re hungry because you’re going to a cake tasting today.”
She blinked at him. “Excuse me?”
“I was supposed to go try cakes at two o’clock. Molly’s going to hound me—my mom is going to hound me—so you’ll be doing it for me.”
“Excuse me?” she repeated raising her voice, not for lack of hearing.
“You heard me.”
“I did, and I’m waiting for the punch line.”
He looked at her, face completely still, unmoved. His body was tight, she could tell from the way his jaw twitched and his hands were bunched up by his sides. Amara knew he wasn’t kidding, but she was hoping he would take it back. How could he want to purposely hurt her? He knew it would.
“Does it look like I’m joking?”
She blinked to fight the tears she felt coming. Amara knew he could be mean, but she didn’t expect him to be this insensitive. He had to know it hurt her to come to terms with the wedding, and a cake tasting was practically sealing the deal. Her gut was telling her to speak out; her mind was telling her to accept it and move on; and her heart was shredding apart.  Through her turmoil, Colin watched her through narrowed eyes.
“Colin, I can’t,” she said, finally. Her voice was small. It matched the way she felt perfectly.
“Why not?” he asked, cocking his head to one side as he crossed his arms over his chest.
A million reasons flickered between them, beginning as small speckles of light and building into a bigger fire, a wild conflagration, with every moment their eyes searched the other’s. Amara’s heart accelerated and lodged into her throat until she felt like she was going to choke on the intensity of her feelings for him.
Light tears began to fall, unable to stay behind the wall she’d built for them. “Because as much as it kills me to joke about your impending wedding, as much as it hurts when we discuss Molly and I pretend it doesn’t, seeing cakes, trying cakes, picking out flavors… that would make it real, Colin. Don’t you see that? You know me better than anybody else.”  Can’t you see me breaking? She wanted to scream, but held it back. Barely.
For the first time since she’d gotten back to New York, she saw something other than distaste in his eyes. There was a shattering pain now that mirrored hers. Colin stood and slowly rounded his desk. She forced herself not to reach out to him as he stopped in front of her. Amara could smell him —could almost taste him from this proximity—but she kept her hands at her sides, waiting. Colin reached out, his fingers softly skimming down the sleeves of her white blouse, down her arm, until he reached the bare skin of her wrist.
“It is real, Amara,” he whispered.
Her eyes traveled up his perfectly pressed white shirt, to the spot where his collar was open, the knot on his tie already loosened, and finally his eyes, his intense, chocolate eyes.
“I know, but you don’t have to rub it in my face every chance you get,” she said, finally gaining control of herself.
Colin dropped his hand from hers and laughed, his shoulders shaking in dry disbelief as he  looked away from her. “I feel like a string puppet, being pulled in all different directions. I don’t have a choice. What don’t you understand? I have to get married. I don’t have to like it, I don’t even have to like her, but it’s something I need to do. I wanted it to be you, and you threw it back in my face. And you have the audacity to stand here crying?”
“Why? Why do you have to get married before your birthday?” she asked, annoyance clear in her voice.
Colin turned away from her to stand behind his desk again. Clutching the sides of the polished mahogany, he leaned forward with narrowed eyes. “Because this company is riding on that, Amara. Because Lotus is riding on it. Because three of four of the companies my dad left behind in his will are dependent on whether or not I get married. If I do, I remain the majority share holder in them.”
Amara licked her lips and placed her hands on the other side of the desk, mimicking his stance. “And if you don’t?”
Colin didn’t answer right away, his eyes wandered from her full lips to her defined arms, her red nails, and back up to her eyes. “If I don’t, my uncle takes my place.”
“Benjamin? Would that be so bad?” Her voice was soft, belying the way her heart raced from the way energy crackled between them.
“It would be for Lotus, Mara. It would be for my mom, probably for my future,” he said, his voice losing its pretense.  And just like that, they were only Colin and Amara again, as they were before life got messy and smeared its shit all over them.

EXCERPT:
“Come here, I wanna tell you a secret,” he whispered, placing his elbows on the desk and leaning in. She mimicked his stance, leaning in until their faces were closer than they were apart. “You’re right,” he said, his minty breath tickling over her face, not helping her body’s coiling reaction to his proximity. “The queen is the most important piece on that board. She has the power to slay everybody, anyway she wants. The game always looks more promising when your queen is there, but sometimes she’s taken and you have to depend on whatever pieces of the court are left. Maybe you have a bishop and a rook and you can get far with those, or knight…eh, but still, you don’t have the sense of security that queen gives you,” he continued, the gaze in his eyes was so intense she could make out the perfect lines of dark brown that etched the lighter shade of his pupil and she didn’t dare look away from him. He leaned closer then, the side of his face grazing hers, the little hairs on his face making her shiver profusely and the low chuckle that followed, right beside her ear causing that shiver to turn into two. “So you see, Mara, some people think they can target my queen, take her from me, do with her as they wish. They think I’ll just stand back with my dick tucked between my legs and watch them treat her like a puppet.” He inched even closer, his cologne making her head spin, his words were low, husky, said in the voice he’d used countless times to ground out her name when he was thrusting his dick inside her. She could practically feel him sliding against her, his breath over her as she panted beneath him. Her nipples tightened at the visual in her head as she pictured her nails scraping against his muscled back. “But she's not a puppet. She’s a motherfucking queen.”

“That’s Mr. Wolfe’s.” Lisbeth said, pointing to her left. “That’s Mr. Underwood’s, though I think it’s temporary. I don’t really know.”

“Who is Mr. Underwood?” Amara asked. She tried to keep her voice calm.

“He’s one of Mr. Wolfe’s assistants. The large accounts go through him.”

Amara swallowed and gripped on to her purse, trying to keep her head from spinning. It was only a name.

“What’s his name?” she asked, despite herself.

Lisbeth stopped walking and turned to her, confused. “Excuse me?”

“Mr. Underwood. What’s his name?”

If a pin dropped during the pause, Amara would hear it and point exactly where it fell, that’s how anxious she felt.

“Brandon…” Lisbeth said, her brows crinkling. “Do you know him?”

She shook her head lightly and cleared her throat. “Nope. Just sounded familiar.”

Lisbeth shrugged and turned back around, pointing at the desk in the center of the room. “This is your desk.”

“That would be correct,” she heard Colin say behind them. Amara closed her eyes momentarily, until the heat that his voice produced began to wash away. “I’ll take it from here, Liz. Thank you.”

“My pleasure, Mr. Wolfe,” Lisbeth responded as she walked back to the elevator. “Let me know if you want to do lunch, Amara.”

“I will. Thank you.” Amara smiled, turning around to watch her go, though she refused to look at Colin head on.

“Perhaps another day, Liz. Amara needs to accompany me to my lunch meeting today at twelve. Please remind me fifteen minutes prior.”

“Sure thing.”

The elevator closed and Amara finally tore her eyes from it to look at Colin. He was running his tongue between his teeth as he assessed her body and her face.

“You look…” His eyes traveled down her body one last time before he cleared his throat. “Very professional. Let’s get started.”

Amara frowned and shook her head. She knew what he wanted to say, she could see the desire flickering in his eyes as he stared at her, but she played along. Amara pivoted around and swayed her hips a little more exaggerated than usual as she rounded the desk and sat in the chair. When she looked up, Colin was still standing in the same spot. Coincidentally, the suit he wore matched her skirt. It fit him as if it was made for him. He always bought the athletic fit tailor that hugged his strong back and arms. Colin’s dark gaze was glued to her as he strode over to her.

“Did you get a chance to see my office?” he asked casually as he walked toward it.

“Nope.”

“Well, come take a look. You’ll have to know where the files go when you bring them to me, in case I’m on the phone or not here.”

Amara pressed down on her heels and stood, following him into the large corner office. She brushed past him, directly to the floor to ceiling windows and looked for her apartment building. She was sure she could see everything from there.

“It’s a beautiful view.”

“It is,” he agreed. She heard his chair sliding against the hardwood and let herself enjoy the view for a moment longer. He was looking at her when she turned around to face him.

“So, the files.”

“Yeah, the files,” he said, placing his hand on the right side of his desk. “I want them here. Anything I sign and is ready to be sent out, I’ll put on this side.” He signaled the left side of his desk. “I don’t think you can fuck that up.”

Biting her tongue, she looked away from him, back to the city, and reminded herself to breathe. “I think I’ll be fine. Anything else?”

“You’ll be in charge of my schedule. You’re on call all the time, anything I need you’ll have to take care of.”

She cut her eyes to him. “How did I end up here?”

“I shelled out a fuck load of money, that’s how.”

***Blog Tour Stop and Giveaway*** Catch Me by Claire Contreras

Title: Catch Me
Author: Claire Contreras
Genre: Adult Contemporary Romance.
Release Date: November 17th, 2013

BLURB:

In the past, I've always been given everything I've wanted, but nothing that I truly needed. I've experienced a lot of things in my twenty-five years, everything except the one thing I want. It's the one thing that can’t be bought. It can't even be taken, it has to be given. And nobody has ever given it to me, not really anyway.

Not until him.

Music is the center of both our lives, but as he found his place in it, I lost my way. He soared, while I spiraled down a destructive path.
I lost myself in more ways than I can count.

The ironic thing is that I didn’t realize how lost I was until he found me.

And now that he has, I have to wonder if he'll stay around long enough to catch me.

LESLEY'S REVIEW:

“Depression is cruel bitch. She starts by planting little seeds all over your mind, knowing that life’s troubles will water it daily until it flows into a massive bonsai tree that crowds your thoughts and feelings, not leaving any room for leaves of hope to spur from it.”

Meet Brooklyn, a young woman who’s been through emotional hell and is still recovering. All her life she’s been told or made to feel that she is not good enough. She has everything anyone could want materialistically, that is. However, all she wants is to feel that she is unconditionally loved. That she is loved even when or if she’s over weight or just average. That people don’t want to be her friend just to reap the benefits of her famous parents. She wants to feel good enough for someone just as she is without the famous name.

Brooklyn falls into her depressive tendency at a young age.  In her past, she forms a close relationship with someone struggling with the same problems, Ryan.  These two along with her new found boyfriend, Shea, are running towards things that help numb the pain. Shea is an up and coming artist. Living the rock style life.  Experimenting with outrageous drugs. Drugs become a big part of their lives. Tragedy strikes scarring Brooklyn with deeper wounds. We don’t learn the depth of this pain right away. Bits and pieces come to life as Brooklyn’s present life develops.

Working for her father Brooklyn is sent to New York where she meets Nick. The stereotyped bad boy producer. He’s hot and intriguing. Obviously, she struggles to stay away from him in that sense. But when Shea asks her to come along on tour to search for new talent, Nick becomes part of the bargain. Keeping it professional quickly becomes harder than she originally expected. The closer she gets to Nick the more she sees that he struggles with some of the same things in life. She decides that he’s actually a good guy. With trust building these two fall head over heels for each other. Just as life seems to going in the right direction, bad news travels to Brooklyn. This causes all her demons and insecurities to come back with a vengeance. Those little seeds start to multiply, smothering themselves to death.

“My hand feels bare without his in it and that scares me.”

It’s up to Brooklyn to look past those insecurities and see the truth. It seems as though Nick just might be strong enough to see through her self-doubt and fight for her. Strong enough to break through and prove that she is ENOUGH for him. He wants her and only her.

“I feel like I’ll die if he doesn’t kiss me, but at the same time my heart might explode if he does.”

It’s hard for me to put into words what I feel about this book. The story line was a good one. I truly loved getting to know the characters. However, for me the first half of the book felt off kilter. I really can’t put my finger on the exact thing though.I’m a truly stumped as to what it was that bothered me. The second half was completely different for me though. The story really picked up once they headed off for the tour. I was highly engaged at this point.  I loved the unexpected twists and turns. Shea’s character makes my heart ache for him. Actually, they all do in a way. They were just broken in different places, leaning on other broken people to keep it together. Despite my feelings of being conflicted with this one I really liked it but my rating is still around 3.5.

Teaser:
He never takes his eyes off of me as he crosses the street. He walks around a group of people, purposely stepping to my side. There’s no time for formal hellos in the middle of the street, and I’m glad for that because I don’t want to introduce him to my brother and do the whole shebang in a crowded street. My smile is fixed on my face as he approaches, also smiling at me, his eyes crinkling in mischief. When he brushes past me, he takes my hand and squeezes it slightly. It’s just a squeeze. Just. But it’s enough to get my heart pumping, my blood tingling, and my eyes widening as if I’ve been caught doing something wrong, which I know is ridiculous, but that’s how his touch makes me feel.

Told in separate points of view, Darkness Before Dawn is the continuation of Blake and Cole’s fight to make it to the light.

Excerpt:

Loud pounding on the bathroom door breaks me from my daydream and I get up quickly to turn off the water and get out of the shower. The pounding on the door continues until I yell out that I’m almost done. Once I’m dressed, I take a deep breath and decide that I will not let them break me; I won’t let my family down. I open the door and find Dean on the other side of it, wearing a plaid blue button down shirt with the sleeves rolled up, jeans, and black boots. His voluminous dark hair is perfectly styled, and even though I hate facial hair, I notice that the shadow of a beard displayed on his face looks pretty good on him. My eyes trail down his slim body and stay glued to the tattoo I see on his left forearm, until his chuckle brings me to meet his twinkling hazel eyes.

“Well, this is a change,” he says, the side of his mouth forming in a slight smile.

“What is?” I ask crinkling my eyebrows.

“You. Checking me out instead of glaring at me,” he says as a slow smile spreads on his face.

My mouth pops open for a moment before I recover my thoughts. “I was not checking you out! I was trying to figure out what your tattoo is. There’s a difference. Besides, you’re not in your uniform today. It’s weird to see you wearing grown up clothes.” I mock.

He doesn’t really wear a uniform, but most of the time he’s dressed in jeans, a white T-shirt and a leather jacket.

He shakes his head. “If you say so.” I can hear the disbelief in his voice and it makes me want to throw something at him.

“Do you have another magazine for me?”

He’s been bringing me magazines to help my boredom. I have to hide them whenever Alex comes to check up on me just in case, but that’s a small price to pay for entertainment. I may not know what’s going on in the world, but I know what celebrity couples are together and what the latest trend fashion is. So far, Drew Barrymore got married and Jessica Simpson had a baby. Maybe if I would have kept up with gossip before, this would be exciting for me to know, but frankly, I don’t give a damn. I sigh dreamily at my own thoughts and daze off thinking of Gerald O’Hara. God, I need to get the fuck out of here! You know it’s bad when you’re day dreaming of an old dead guy.

“You’re such a pain in the ass,” Dean says with a laugh, and then suddenly stops. “Shit. I was kidding, chick, you didn’t have to go and cry about it.”

I wipe my tears, but can’t stop the sobs from escaping my throat before I bury my face in my hands. How pathetic am I that I can’t be called a pain in the ass without crying? How pathetic is it that everything reminds me of Cole? Once I calm down, I wipe my face again and bring the tray onto my lap, avoiding his gaze.

“So, you don’t like being called a pain in the ass?” he asks quietly. I know he’s trying to keep the conversation light, but I’m not in the mood for any of it.

“No,” I grumble before taking a bite of toast. “I don’t like being called anything.”

He sits in front of me and watches me eat in silence. When I finish, I get up and head to the bathroom, leaving him sitting on the floor by my bed.

I wash my hands before sitting up on the counter and lean my back on the mirror hoping that he gets tired of waiting for me and leaves. I idly begin to draw circles over the green bruises on my calf and it hits me that that’s all I am these days: cuts and bruises, inside and out. At the sound of thunder outside, I snap back to reality and hop off the counter, picking up my hair in a messy pony tail as I open the door, hoping to walk into an empty room, but Dean still there flipping through my magazine.

“You gonna sit here and read old gossip all day?” I ask.

He raises an amused eyebrow. “This is new gossip.”

As he walks over to me, I notice our difference in height, for some reason I had never noticed the way he towers over me. Probably because I’m always looking at the ground unless I’m sitting on it. He’s definitely not as tall as Cole, nothing about his physical appearance is like Cole’s. Cole is tall and muscular, Dean is tall and lean. Cole has more of a playboy face, whereas Dean is more of a rugged pretty boy. The only thing they have in common is that swag, or spark that some guys have. The one that draws you to them, even though you know in the back of your mind that you will get burned once you get too close. When he leans close to hand over the magazine, making me flinch a little, I take in his scent of nicotine and cinnamon.

He holds my stare as we both grip either side of the magazine. “I wouldn’t hurt you, Chick, okay?”

“You are hurting me,” I whisper as I take it from his hand and sit down on the bed. I downcast my eyes and look at it, but it looks blurry through my eyes and I can’t make out who’s on the cover. He cups his hand under my chin and lifts my face to look at him, but I turn my face out of his hold. “Don’t touch me, please.”

Jenn's Review:

I was past ready to read this book when I finally got the chance. After the ending of There is No Light in Darkness, I was a mess! After everything Blake and Cole had endured, separately and together, the nightmare will continue for them. I finally got my nails to grow back! Now I’m going to have to start all over!!
As the story begins, we find out that some time has passed since Blake was taken but she has no idea how much. She is allowed to eat, bathe and do laundry. She has been beaten and the only thing that gets her through the days and nights are thoughts of Cole.
Cole is going crazy. He knows Blake is alive but has no idea how to find her. He needs help finding Blake and doesn’t have many options. Every time he checks to see what is being done, he is always told, it is being handled. Ummm right. Like that answer is going to stand. It’s a good thing Cole and Blake have the right people on their side. It is with their help that Blake attempts to escape. However, the plan backfires and Blake begins another kind of fight. And, it changes her life again and in a way she could not prepare herself for.
Cole is wonderfully supportive, caring and beyond loving where Blake is concerned. He will not allow her to live in her nightmare alone. He does not let her sink into herself and let the darkness take over. He was so strong for her that it took my breath away. Where Cole is concerned, he had me in tears more often than not.
Darkness Before Dawn also has some amazing supporting characters. The extended “family” that we were able to spend time with were fabulous and I am so glad they stuck around. Too many times I’ve been introduced to characters in a book then they just go away. Claire had this group stay a part of the story until the very end.
Claire also threw in a surprise that I absolutely LOVED!! I won’t tell you what it is, I want you to figure it out. But, It. Was. Awesome.
My emotions were all over the place with this book. While reading certain parts I would have to stop reading because I couldn’t see through my tears. The love Blake and Cole have for each other was evident and plain as day. I know their story had to come to an end but I wasn’t ready for it. This is definitely a story that I will read again and again.

Separation has forced both Blake and Cole to learn how to live under the worst circumstances, each of them alone in their own hell.

When they reunite, can they be the same two people they were before darkness swept upon them?
Told in separate points of view, Darkness Before Dawn is the continuation of Blake and Cole’s fight to make it to the light.

 Snippet:
“I didn’t know you were awake,” I reply turning my body toward him and caressing his arm.
He gives me a lopsided smile. “I just woke up. How can you be so pretty in the morning?” he muses as his eyes scan my face.
“I’m not,” I groan throwing my head back on to the hard mattress. “This bed sucks.”
He chuckles. “You are,” he replies as he covers my body with his, opening my thighs with his and settling his weight between my legs. “You’re the most beautiful creature ever made...and you’re right, this bed sucks ass.”
“You’re just saying that because you want to have sex,” I say with a laugh as I look at him, thinking the same about him.
He tilts his head as he regards me. “Nah, we’re going to have sex anyway, I don’t have to sweet talk you into doing that.”
My laughter is cut short when he grinds against me, the hardness in his boxers making me gasp and tilt my pelvis toward it.
