The Book Blog's 2013 List of Favorites

We wanted to share with you our list of TOP reads for 2013. These are the books that spoke to us, stayed with us and left us wanting to stay with them. So, without further ado...

Sandy B’s Top 13 of 2013
These were books I read in 2013 – not necessarily released in 2013
Every single one of these reads rocked my world, made me laugh, made me cry, made me want to fling my Kindle, made me bite my fingernails and a couple even drove me to tequila. Some of them, I’m sure, are familiar to all of you.  Others, I’m really hoping will be new to you.  There is nothing that I love more than to help readers find a great new author to enjoy.  Well - I also love to turn people on to the magic of the Amazon Kindle app on their electronic devices if they don’t own a Kindle. J
These are in author last name order – not in order of preference – because truth be told I loved them all.  EACH AND EVERY SINGLE ONE.
1.            Arsen by Mia Asher - http://amzn.to/1dSlftP
The book that drove me into the arms of Jose Cuervo. It broke my soul reading this one but boy was it worth the ride!  Who would believe this is Mia’s first book – masterful!  READ IT!

2.            Promise Me by Barbie Bohrman - http://amzn.to/17RZMA
What if you could go back to what seemed like the bad boy but really turned out to be the good guy.  What if this read contained two EPIC tell off scenes that I relished so much I read them 3 times?  Loved it!

3.            Wallbanger  by Alice Clayton - http://amzn.to/1kjrFIV
What genius writing by Alice Clayton.  Not only was Wallbanger very smart and very sexy – it was laugh out loud funny fabulous writing.  One word – CLIVE!  Read it and you will understand.

4.            Darkness Series by Claire Contreras
Oh the mind blowing twists and turns that the Darkness Series took me on.  I actually had to close my Kindle and walk away at one point cause I was so pissed off!  But oh my goodness you will never forget Cole Murphy.  You will love him “to the moon and back”.  He is bare naked romance personified.

There is No Light in Darkness (Book #1) - http://amzn.to/1hIS3us
Darkness Before Dawn (Book #2) - http://amzn.to/1iEavUD

5.            Real Series by Katy Evans
Oh Remington Tate!  The only BBF that in my mind/heart comes close to stealing my love away from Gideon Cross (Crossfire Series by Sylvia Day).  Remy is intense, he is overpowering, he is oh so ridiculously sexy that from the moment he comes on the page – you can’t get enough of him.

Real (Real Series Book #1) - http://amzn.to/1i64VHQ
Mine (Real Series #2) - http://amzn.to/19xSVMv
Remy (Real Series #3) - http://amzn.to/17D2Pyd

6.       The Leaves Series by J.B. Hartnett
I sobbed when I discovered why Anika is called Inky. Once I read Inky I totally understood the cover. Compelling writing, a story of heartbreak, revenge and the healing power of love.  Adored it.

Inky (The Leaves Book #1) - http://amzn.to/17f0FST
Cole (The Leaves Book #2)  - http://amzn.to/1dKBo42

7.         Hopeless by Colleen Hoover – http://amzn.to/19tSd37
SOUL SEARING!  The book hangover this one gave me lasted for weeks.  I still think about it and smile. The non-kiss kissing scene was one of the hottest things I’ve ever read. Colleen Hoover is a genius!

8.            Fear of Falling – http://amzn.to/1cPelbD
Some of the most beautiful writing that I have ever read.  Lyrically beautiful, heart rendering kind of beautiful,
the more you read the more you love kind of beautiful. S.L. Jennings stole my heart forever and I'm not ashamed to admit it. Not one little bit.

9.            Very Bad Things by Ilsa Madden-Mills – http://amzn.to/1bdv854
Everything seems perfect on the outside – what’s underneath the glossiness of perfection is ugly.  Nora and Leo are so great!  A drunk gossip girl, a guy who wants nothing to do with her but can’t stay away, the little brother who has more wisdom than the two of them put together. Loved the surrounding cast of characters and look forward to their stories too.

10.            Unbreak Me by Lexi Ryan – http://amzn.to/1i63uZL
This girl has no illusions about who she is or what she is – she’s no goody two shoes. Small time slut with too much baggage is how Maggie sees herself.  She’s back in town to attend her sister’s wedding. Maggie’s sister is marrying William Bailey – Maggie’s ex-fiance!  Yea, you want to read this one for sure.

11.            Chocolate Lovers Series by Tara Sivec
I started Seduction and Snacks on my commute to work. People on the bus must have thought I was crazy because I laughed out loud over and over again. Tara Sivec is genius!  She tells the truth of motherhood that many would not dare admit without forgetting the sexy. Fabulously entertaining in every single way.

Seduction and Snacks (Chocolate Lovers Series Book #1) - http://amzn.to/1kjv6PF
Futures and Frosting (Chocolate Lovers Series Book #2) - http://amzn.to/1gzwHfi
Troubles and Treats (Chocolate Lovers Series Book #3) - http://amzn.to/1i6dLoZ
Hearts and Llamas (Chocolate Lovers Series Book #3.5) - http://amzn.to/1ljkE90

12.            Carter Reed by Tijan – http://amzn.to/1eyfj8L
The beginning of this book will get your heart racing.  Make no mistake Carter Reed is not a nice guy.  As a matter of fact he has a penchant for taking out anyone that gets in his way.  He is the anti-hero for sure but I DO NOT care. I loved him.  He made his best friend a promise and he is going to keep it- no matter what it takes.

13.            The Ever Trilogy by Jasinda Wilder
Jasinda took my heart and broke it, put it back together and broke it again!  I laughed, I rejoiced, I cried and I couldn’t put them down.

Forever & Always - http://amzn.to/1bU2B0v
After Forever - http://amzn.to/19YGAxR

Lesley's TOP 13 of 2013
I’m sure there is something we love about each and every book we read.(even the ones that don’t rate that well) Each one becomes a little piece of treasure we keep stowed in our kindles or book shelves. Jenn's TOP 13 of 2013
With so many great books, I had a hard time! Several are from a series or the entire series. They made me laugh, cry and swoon and rereading them has or will happen. Something I love even more, getting to tell the author of said book what the story meant to me. I honestly don't think that will ever get old. My list is in no particular order. If you've read any on our list, let us know what you thought about the book. You know we can sit and talk about books all day long!

***Cover Reveal*** Collaboration by Michelle Lynn and Featuring Nevaeh Lee

This is not your typical rock star romance. For one, the “rock star” is a rapper. And not just any rapper. Trace is the hottest ticket in the music industry right now, regardless of which definition of ‘hot’ you choose.

Taryn Starr is not the girl-next-door who unknowingly meets a celebrity. Known as “America’s Sweetheart,” the reigning country music princess and world-renowned superstar knows exactly who Trace is…or does she?

Their worlds collide when the musicians whose paths were never destined to cross are forced by their joint record label to collaborate on a song. The sparks fly and ignite a fire that blazes hotter with every minute they spend together—for better or worse. One thing’s for certain, the two media magnets can’t deny their explosive chemistry, but will life in the spotlight ultimately bring Trace and Taryn together or force them apart?

***This contemporary romance new adult novel is for mature audiences. The language alone would make a sailor blush (the guy’s a rapper, remember?) so 18+ only, please.

Michelle Lynn

Michelle moved around the Midwest most of her life, transferring from school to school before settling down in the outskirts of Chicago ten years ago, where she now resides with her husband and two kids. She developed a love of reading at a young age, which helped lay the foundation for her passion to write. With the encouragement of her family, she finally sat down and wrote one of the many stories that have been floating around in her head. When she isn’t reading or writing, she can be found playing with her kids, talking to her mom on the phone, or hanging out with her family and friends. But after chasing around twin preschoolers all day, she always cherishes her relaxation time after putting the kids to bed.

Nevaeh Lee

Nevaeh’s first exposure to writing began in a middle school creative writing class. She was reprimanded for composing a politically incorrect story and forced to re-write about a “safer” topic. Being the writing rebel that she is, Nevaeh always likes to push the envelope a bit and never re-writes, unless her editor insists on it.

When she’s not writing, Nevaeh is a freelance book editor ;).  And though she spends a good chunk of her time reading, writing, and editing, she can also be found hanging out with her family and taking road trips, exploring the area around wherever she happens to be living at the time. Even though “home” will always be Texas, she has lived in several different states and countries, but currently resides in the DC metro area.

Your employment is terminated. I’m out of the office this morning for meetings but you should pack up your belongings by 1 p.m. today. Your last pay check will arrive in the mail.” That was the first email waiting for Evan on Monday morning, May 29, 2000, at the office where he had worked for the last two years. ChocaChump.com, the Internet-based, chocolate home delivery company, was another dot-com whose days were numbered. About six weeks earlier, the NASDAQ had dropped more than twenty-five percent from its peak in a single week. The tech crash would continue, and Evan’s boss, a mercurial CEO who closely managed his twenty employees, grew increasingly bitter and difficult as his company faltered. After Evan read the email terminating his employment, he recalled their curt discussion from the previous Friday. “Tell me the real reason why you were gone so long yesterday.” “It’s the reason I gave you: my grandma had a bad fall and needed to be taken to the hospital. She called me for help because my parents were out of town.” “You were gone for six hours.” “Well, I had to go to Queens, where she lives. She needed a bunch of medical tests. And I wasn’t just going to leave her alone in the hospital. She’s a seventy-five-year old widow, so I had to be there to comfort her, and help her deal with insurance forms, doctors, etc.” “Evan, everyone’s got problems. You don’t think I have a grandma who needs me just as much? Do you think our competitors care about our grandmas? It’s war out there! And we’re losing. Things used to be much better, but our operating budget no longer covers middle-of-the-day-grandma-emergencies.” “But this is the first time I’ve ever done that. And I told you before I left that I had a family emergency. I can come in this weekend to make up for the lost work time.” “Yes, please do that...I’ll have to think things over.” As he promised, Evan spent much of his Saturday making up for his time away from the office. But there was no reversing a CEO desperate to trim his payroll. Evan decided not to tell his girlfriend, Alexandra, about the fact that he was now unemployed. He would wait until after they returned from the Puerto Rican vacation that he had promised her a month ago, so that she could fully enjoy the experience, rather than feel guilty about the expense. The quality time with her would also help him to refocus on what really mattered to him, he thought. Hoping for a fresh and positive start the morning after he was fired, Evan turned on his home laptop and purchased the airline tickets online. He then logged into his email account, so that he could forward the trip details to Alexandra. He noticed a new email from her in his inbox. “Evan, Hun, sorry to tell you like this over email, but my plane’s leaving soon, so I don’t have time to do this in person. I’m leaving because I really need a break. From everything. Please don’t start wondering what this means or what you did wrong or anything, because you’ve been great. And that means that I have to use that trite line about how this isn’t about you. Because it really is about me...I’m twenty-four years old and I feel like I’m losing my youth suddenly. I just want to feel young and free for a few months. And I’m tired of this city. It’s making me old. The routine, the stress, the constant competition. I just need to escape for a while. I know we were supposed to go away one of these weekends, but I need more than a weekend. Much more. I decided – in a totally spur of the moment kind of way – to go to Australia. I know this all seems crazy and surprising, but that’s how these things go when you’re young. Without planning too much. I’ll be gone for six weeks. Maybe more. I’d ask you to wait for me, but that wouldn’t be fair to either of us. And I’m just not sure we’re right for each other, even though you’re really a wonderful guy...I think a clean break would be best for both of us. By the time you read this I’ll probably be on a plane. I’m really sorry, Evan, because I know this will hurt, even though that was never my intention. Call it a crazy and selfish impulse, but I just need this change right now. You’ve always been a sweetheart and I’ll totally miss you. Postcards will follow! Kisses, Alexandra.” ***** Evan stared at his laptop screen, in speechless disbelief. For the lonely three months that followed, he struggled with the loss of a job he had mostly enjoyed, and a woman he had begun to love after almost five months of dating her. On the few occasions when he could motivate himself to go out and act like a single man again, Evan crashed and burned with every woman he approached. Julia, a sexy, thirty-two-year-old therapist, was the only exception, but there were too many issues for that prospect to go anywhere. She couldn’t resist psychoanalyzing Evan whenever they met, which he soon realized was just her way of avoiding her own doldrums. Julia was clinically depressed and desperately seeking marriage and children (which Evan didn’t want for another four or five years), so his conscience forced him to nip things in the bud, even though she seemed open to a fling with him. Thus, Evan continued stumbling along his losing streak, learning just how much being down is not particularly appealing to anyone – especially the attractive women of New York City, clad in their heels or hipster boots, looking for a good time. Evan Cheson was actually a charming and good-looking man. He had a full head of thick, black hair; blue eyes; an athletic, six-foot-one build; smooth, dark eyebrows; and facial features suggestive of his French-Italian ancestry. And for most of his adult life, he had been a confident and successful man, from school, to work, to women.

The Character Bios

SAMMY — at a mere five-eight, he’s the shortest, chubbiest, and baldest in the group. But the quirky math geek, who works as an actuary, is also the funniest and the smartest of the gang. Sammy is nicknamed “Heeb” because of his plan to enjoy bachelorhood with only non-Jews until age 28, at which point he will date only Jewish girls so as to find his wife by age 30. In his ever unpredictable dating adventures, Heeb will try just about anything to get a date with a woman.
CARLOS — Sammy’s Harvard College roommate. Carlos has the slick Latin look of a telenovela star. The six foot one Mexican-American dresses with impeccable style, maintains a great physique, and easily charms with his silver tongue. But he’s still a virgin when he graduates from college because of his obsessive and irrational fear of germs, his Puritanical beliefs, and his impossibly selective standards.
YI WANG (“Narc”) — Evan’s freshman year roommate at Brown College. Yi is a good-looking, Chinese-American, who is fluent in Cantonese and ghetto talk, and — at six-three — was the star basketball player of his high school. Nicknamed “Narc” during high school for his willingness to experiment with narcotics (and later “Narse” for his narcissistic focus on his looks/style), he goes on to become a disgruntled corporate lawyer after studying at Columbia Law School. But Narc secretly maintains two alternative career fantasies: both seem wildly unrealistic, but one is unthinkable because of the shame it would cause his traditional parents.
TREVOR — A debonaire, Afro-British man who became Narc’s best friend and basketball partner while earning his JD degree at Columbia Law School. Originally from Ghana but educated at Oxford, Trevor charms anyone who hears him talk — if they can turn their attention away from his extraordinary six-foot-seven height (which earned him the nickname “Tower”). Trevor sports a perfectly clean shaven head and escapes the drudgery of his corporate law firm job by exploring yoga, alternative careers, and new dating prospects.

About the Author

Zack Love graduated from Harvard College, where he tried to create a bachelor’s degree in Women. With the bachelor portion of that degree in hand, he settled in New York City but – to afford renting his bed-sized studio – found himself flirting mostly with a computer screen and stacks of documents. Determined not to die a corporate drone, Zack decided to sacrifice sleep for screenwriting, an active social life, and Internet startups offering temporary billion-dollar fantasies.
To feed his steady diet of NYC nightlife, he regularly crashed VIP parties in the early 2000s and twice bumped into his burgeoning crush, a Hollywood starlet. But – much to Zack’s surprise – neither of those awkward conversations led to marriage with the A-list actress. Zack eventually consoled himself by imagining fiascoes far worse than those involving his celebrity crush. In the process, he dreamed up a motley gang of five men inspired by some of his college friends and quirky work colleagues. And thus was born Sex in the Title. But the novel is not autobiographical: Zack never had his third leg attacked by any mammal (nor by any plant, for that matter). In fact, keeping his member safe has been one of Zack’s lifelong goals – and one of the few that he’s managed to accomplish.

Favorite Quotes

“You didn’t seem this shy on the dance floor.  You can move! I was imagining you moving like that under me in my bed
“So, what is your name?  I want to know what to moan in my sleep when I dream about you tonight.”

Sandy B's Review

Girl meets hot sexy ex-military boy named Victor in a bar.  Monica is a goody two shoes teacher whose youth was scarred by a terribly violent rape.  To say she hasn’t had much experience with men is putting it lightly.  Victor on the other hand has had plenty of experience with women and is ready, willing and able to share it all with Monica.  There is one condition “Don’t fall in love with him; Don’t get close to him; Don’t miss him; Don’t get attached.  He can only give one weekend a month due to his other “obligations”.

You would think that would be enough to send most women running for the hills.  Nope!  Not Monica because the sex is off the charts. Unlike anything she’s ever known.  The girl is sprung, hooked, whipped or whatever you want to call it.  She’s had a taste, she likes it and she wants more.  She plays along hoping that what she feels, Victor will feel, if he just gives them a chance.  Really?! Who does that?!  He told her over and over, the same thing, like a mantra.  The constant repetition got a little annoying actually.  At that point, is he trying to convince Monica or himself?

I do think that it would have been nice to know more about Monica’s life from the rape to where we “meet” her again.  Both of these people are hurt from past events, both are flawed in their own way and both are also drawn to each other like a moth to a flame.  There were several times during this book that I wanted to smack one or both of them.  Which I guess considering all things is good.  Reading a book that makes me “feel” is one of my favorite things EVER.

I’ll be watching MJ Nightingale develop.  Hopefully, you will too.
