Everything I Have I Owe to 50 Shades of Grey

by Sandy B.

Well – that's a slight exaggeration on my part.  Please let me explain.

Books and reading have always been a great love of mine.  An escape from the reality of everyday life.  I could be anyone, go anywhere, and do anything within the pages of those books.  As we all know, life continues and reading fell further and further behind to my family, my work and my friends.  Then these books called The 50 Shades of Grey Trilogy came to my attention.  Everyone was talking about them.  They were all over the news and social media.  Everyone was reading them.  They were “gasp!” erotica and talked of whips, bondage and butt plugs.  People were now speaking of these things openly and not hiding their interest.  I saw women reading them while running on the treadmill at the gym, on the bus while riding to work – even while walking down the street on their Kindles.

I must admit that my curiosity was killing me!  Truth is – the commute back and forth to work gave me 2 hours every day to indulge my curiosity.  The author, EL James, gave an interview and I was a little surprised at her attitude.  Despite criticisms about her writing – she was adamant that nothing was going to be changed.  She laughed off the criticism.  I liked her.  On April 17, 2012, I went on Amazon and 1-Clicked FSoG.  I blushed, I laughed, I gasped, not because I was shocked at the subject matter – because it was now mainstream.  Erotica was no longer a dirty little secret to be whispered and giggled about with your girlfriends.  An avenue for open and frank discussions between couples, a little something different to spice up a stale bedroom life.

I admit that I enjoyed FSoG, then Fifty Shades Darker – though by 50 Shades Freed, I was a little over Christian Grey.  However, it opened the door to so many wonderful authors, authors that I thoroughly enjoy.  Are they all erotica –no.  I enjoyed historicals, paranormal, young adult and new adult.  Once again, I regained my love of reading.  How could I have forgotten how much it meant to me? The joy that it brought to me.  I created a Facebook page and from that Facebook page I joined book clubs and groups that enjoyed the same time of author.  FSoG opened the door to authors like Sylvia Day, Jasinda Wilder, Colleen Hoover, Tarryn Fisher, Claire Contreras, EL Montes, SL Jennings, M. Leighton, Kristen Proby, S.C. Stephens, Madeline Sheehan, Mia Asher, Ilsa Madden-Mills, Jenna Galicki, JB Hartnett and Crystal Spears. I lived their stories!  The book clubs and groups allowed me to discuss these stories as if the characters were real.  I had a BBF (Book Boyfriend – Gideon Cross).  We quoted preferred passages to each other.  I made real friends, like Danielle, because she lent me This Man by Jodi Ellen Malpas.  It was as if we’ve known each other all our lives.

I was asked by a popular blogger if I wanted to do a guest review.  I agreed.  It was so much fun!  Then I started following the pages of my favorite authors.  Interacting with them on a daily basis added another dimension to the books I was reading.  Most of them written by independent authors who were not backed by large publishing houses.  They were approachable, open, warm and friendly to their readers.  Then I was asked by one of the popular bloggers (Hi Jenn D.!) if I wanted to admin a blog.  Of course, I was interested in everything that it would entail.  A few days later, I said yes.  Officially I became part of The Book Blog in April of 2013. The other girls that admin the blog (Jenn N. & Lesley) were kind and receptive.  We immediately clicked.  It was a “marriage” made in heaven.  I learned.  I grew.  I enjoyed.  I now had an outlet for my thoughts and an opportunity to indulge in writing – even if it’s just reviews and articles.  Funnily enough, it was almost exactly a year to the day that I read 50 Shades of Grey.

Then in February of last year I was diagnosed with breast cancer.  I was faced with a mastectomy, 16 rounds of chemotherapy, 5 weeks of daily radiation and an entire year of once a month antibody treatments.  Oh, please don’t feel sorry for me, and I am, by no means complaining.  This is just a statement of fact.  I knew what to expect and accepted it as the price to pay for my survival.  What I didn’t expect was the love, compassion, generosity and support of the amazing community that has become such an integral part of my life.  That doesn’t mean that my family and friends haven’t been loving and supportive – they have.

Understand this, a lot of these people I have never even met face to face.  Those bonds of friendship have been forged over countless FB group chats, IM’s, author signings, endless debates over which alpha male is the hottest.  At the core of all of there is one thing – LOVE.  Love of a great story, love of that first kiss, love of a well written sex scene, love of a good cry, love of the angst that makes you want to fling your Kindle (yes I’m talking about you Mia Asher), love of that leading man who makes us want to be his leading lady, love of a cliffhanger, and ultimately the love of an HEA (Happily Ever After).  Our common goal is to spread the word when we find a great read.  To then dissect and discuss our favorite parts until we’ve had our fill.  Some even tattoo their favorite line of a book somewhere on their body.  Yes, I have thought about it.  No, I haven’t done it yet.

These amazing people have encouraged me, prayed for me, sent me cards and care packages (#WeBlich/Ashley love you guys!) with everything from signed books, nail polish, candles and popcorn. Our following on this blog, they make me smile (Hi Bookers!), I see myself in them because they get me (#VixenLove).  Each and every one of them has made a huge beautiful positive difference in my life.  Thank you all!

Who knew my life would expand in such an amazing way.  Who knew that all these FB friends would become such an integral part of my life.  Who knew all this would come from reading FSoG! I wish I could tell EL James myself, how her books have opened a door for me that brings me joy every single day.  I’m so very grateful.

In a few weeks we will get to “meet” Christian Grey as embodied by Jamie Dornan.  Many had VERY strong opinions about the casting of the FSoG movie.  Speaking for myself, I’m looking forward to seeing it.  Who was cast as CG or Anastasia didn’t matter to me.  My thrill comes from seeing how words on a page translate to video on screen.  This could not have been an easy task for those screenwriters.  Truth is not many writers get an opportunity like this one.  After all, we can’t all be Nicholas Sparks. ;-)

Well done EL James – well done!

Praise for Bound by Flames:
Frost’s incredible patented brand of gripping romance ensures the threats are terrifyingly real and the emotions utterly intense. This is one dark ride, so hang on tight!”--RT Book Reviews, 4.5 Stars, Top Pick!
''I always open a Frost book with happy anticipation.'' --Charlaine Harris

''New and returning readers alike will enjoy this warmhearted and often hot-blooded adventure.'' --Publishers Weekly

Excerpt:
"Truth be told, I didn’t have a lot of experience with flirting. I’d started electrocuting anyone I touched at thirteen, which put me firmly in the “dateless” column for the next twelve years. Not even vampires were immune to the dangers of skin- to-skin contact with me, and that’s when I wasn’t even trying to hurt them. Since I needed the Joker to stay close for the next few minutes, I had to keep up my act, poor faux seduction skills or no. Soon, I’d sneak the detachable fingers off my right glove, touch him while holding in my currents, and thus find out his darkest secret.
Lie detector tests had nothing on my ability to discern people’s worst sins through a single touch. I’d hated my psychometric abilities until recently, when they had become a necessary tool for keeping me and the people I loved alive."--Jeaniene Frost, Bound by Flames

Author Bio

**Bound by custom or unique by choice.**

There's something about the written word that's pure magic.

Possibly it's the fact that there are 26 letters in the English alphabet, and they can create something so beautiful or so empowering that they're able to change our lives.

How important is it that we break suit and stretch our minds?

I like to think of myself as 'unique'. My stories aren't for everyone, and sometimes I may push what you believe to be 'normal'.

Normal is subjective.

I prefer to be known as a person who's never been 'bound by custom' but is 'unique by choice'.

Until next time

EXCERPT:
“Okay, plug them in.”
I run to the porch and plug in the lights, then run back into the front yard to see them.
“Oh, they’re so pretty!”
“Thank God they all work,” he says as he tosses the black shoe down to the ground and then moves carefully down to the ladder. “It would be a bitch to have to take them back down.”
“I checked them,” I assure him, and when his foot finally lands safely on the snow and he turns to me, I hit him on the arm. “You shouldn’t have done that! You took ten years off my life!”
I throw my arms around his torso and squeeze him tightly, then back away.
“No, you shouldn’t have been on that ladder. If I catch you on one again, I’ll spank your ass until it glows.”
My jaw drops as I gaze up into his frustrated face. For once in my life, I’m speechless. I scowl as I pull myself together and clench my fists. “You wouldn’t dare . . .”
“Put yourself in danger again and see if I don’t,” he replies calmly and crosses his arms over his chest.
“Did you come here to bully me?”
He sighs and pulls his beanie off his head, pushing his fingers through the messy brown strands. I want to sink my fingers in that thick, dark hair.
“No. I came because you won’t answer your fucking phone so I can apologize for the other night.”
“I don’t want your apology,” I reply and throw the extra lights and staple gun back into the tote and turn away, but he catches my arm and turns me back to him, takes the tote, and sets it down.
“I’m going to give it anyway.” His jaw is firm. “I had no right to kiss you like that in the parking lot for everyone to see.”
I jerk back, mortified. “You’re apologizing for kissing me?”

***Release Blitz and Giveaway*** Miami Hush Club: Book 2 by Michelle Warren

Summary

I always believed that girls like me didn’t find happily-ever-afters.
But despite my sordid past and personal demons,
the Miami Hush Club promised to make my every fantasy a reality.

With a membership,
they could gift me my dream job,
dream car, dream house,
and the perfect life for me and my little family.
They easily sucked me into the madness and twisted me inside out,
caging me until I didn’t know right from wrong.

The steep price of entry?
My darkest secret.

There’s only one problem.
Some secrets destroy.
Some crush.
Some fragment.
Some even endanger the ones I love,
and the one man I never imagined I would.
Because some secrets, when shared, give power.
And power is a dangerous thing.
Especially when the one pulling my strings, playing god,
has the terrifying means to destroy me.

And worst of all, after I’ve given my secret away,
I find the only thing that’s left is my wrecked and tortured soul.
But guess what?
Nothing’s safe.
The club can take that too.

Miami Hush Club: Book 2 By Michelle Warren
Excerpt:
“Hello, Nicolette,” Casper says slowly, his voice low and seductive.
The timbre of that voice causes my blood to hum with unwanted delight, and I wrap my arms tighter around my body, rooting my feet to my spot to secure a safe distance from him.
Not to be outdone by my presence, Alex instantly treats him as an object that she owns. It’s a clear message for me to stay away. She gives Casper another lingering kiss, and they both moan with pleasure as her hands travel down the front of his pants.
With a forceful grasp, she leads him to her room, tugging him by his dick. She may think she’s in charge, but it’s him who will dominate when they make it to the mattress—if they make it that far. I expect her bedroom door to slam shut behind them, but it doesn’t. Instead, they continue their sexual encounter as if I’m not even here.
Another message: He’s mine.
Like a voyeur, I step to the door and peer in because it’s always me on the outside of the glass, looking in at and wanting everything that Alex has. Another reminder: She gets what she wants when she wants it.
That used to be me too, but now it’s only her.
I’m seething that she’s brought Casper here, outraged that they’re still an item and she didn’t warn me, and furious that I still care. She’ll protect me from everything else, but not from Casper. He’s the one person she feels for more than me. Maybe I’m jealous of that too.
He’s already naked and wrapped in her embrace as I watch him, every hard angle and curve. His abs. His ass. His cock. Perfection. He licks the slope between her bare breasts, but he’s watching me. Fucking her, but mind-fucking me. Nothing’s changed.
And though I desperately don’t want to, all I can imagine is his body settled between my legs, sharp hip bones pressing into my thighs, injecting his soul into mine, hurting me in the most mind-bending and delicious way as I revel in every second.
I can practically feel it, but it’s not me.
It’s her. Always her.
Always Alex.
I’m sick. So very sick with envy and disgust that the past is replaying before my eyes again, and I can’t control myself. Anger and lust races through my veins. Alex and Casper are moaning and rocking with each other now, hanging over the side of the bed, half supported by the floor as I zone out yet again, transfixed by what’s happening and I cannot make it stop. She screams with pleasure and grabs his ass to gain his attention, but he’s still focused on me.

***Blog Tour Stop and Giveaway*** A Million Tiny Pieces by Nicole Edwards

Title: A Million Tiny Pieces
Author: Nicole Edwards
Genre: Adult, Erotic Ménage Romance
Release Date: January 20, 2015
Mia Cantrell is happy to be rid of her lying, cheating, ex-husband. With her divorce final, Mia is moving on, grasping the reins of life once more. She’s learning to deal with the shattered remains while putting one foot in front of the other, taking control of her own decisions, and ultimately living one day at a time. Too bad the universe has put a hiccup (or two) in her well thought out plan.

Phoenix Pierce is putting the pieces back together after the death of his father. Between his multi-million dollar company, the NHL team he now owns, and the endless supply of women willing to share a bed for one night of uninhibited sex, he finds himself going through the motions. Until he meets Mia. Although he’s on a mission to win her, that doesn’t solve his problem of the other person he wants… the man he has denied himself for years.

Tarik Marx doesn’t think anyone could ever fill the void in his life the way Phoenix unknowingly has. That is until he meets Mia. Thanks to a fractured childhood, Tarik has to face a bigger problem: he doesn’t know how it feels to be loved. His past adds additional complexity when Tarik finds himself trying to figure out how he can have them both.

Is it possible for a million tiny pieces to come together again? And if they do, will that make the bond even stronger than before?

Erotic Ménage Romance
Mature Audiences

Let me begin by saying, Nicole Edwards is a master at ménage stories and I’ve loved them all! I don’t know how she does it but that woman knows how to write some HOT stuff. A Million Tiny Pieces was no exception. But, that’s not the only thing. I get emotionally involved with her characters. And, what Mia, Phoenix and Tarik had to deal with had my blood boiling!

I quickly fell in love with each character and several times I wanted to reach into my kindle and throat punch a certain someone. Each person was damaged in their own way and it was evident when they were together that they needed and healed each other.

Another thing I loved about the story? No matter what lies were told, when you put your faith in the right person, nothing else matters. Knowing you can look someone in the eye and without a doubt you know that it’s nothing but lies and BS spewing out of their mouth.

I really enjoyed seeing the banter between Mia, Phoenix and Tarik. Mia was already having a hard time opening up to a man. Turn that into two men and she’s a mess! But, she’s adorable and funny and figured out pretty quickly how to handle these fellas.

Phoenix and Tarik has been friends for years and they were both having a heck of a time keeping their feelings to themselves. Once Mia enters the picture, there isn’t a need to keep quiet. They complete each other like they’ve never experienced. Just be ready for the nasty outside forces trying to make a mess of their lives. This is where the throat punching comes in.

As you can tell, I truly enjoyed this reading experience and I highly recommend you giving A Tiny Million Pieces a chance!
